“Ka ‘Umikumalua o na Po” (a Hawaiian-language adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night”)

  • East-West Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa 1601 East-West Road Honolulu, HI, 96848 United States (map)

Ka ‘Umikūmālua o nā Pō is a selection of scenes from William Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, translated into ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language). While ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i translations of Shakespeare were frequently published in the 19th-century newspapers, there is no record of any performances, and so this is perhaps a historic first, an experimental blending of an English Renaissance story with a contemporary Hawaiian aesthetic, filled with music and lots of comedy. Adapted and directed by Iāsona Kaper, current UHM Hawaiian Theatre haumāna.

The performance will be outdoors and seating is on grass - bring your own mat or low chair. Some chairs will be provided for those who cannot sit on the ground.

Showtime is approximately 30 minutes.
