A HIFF 2022 Spring Showcase Special Sneak Peak
Naz (Naz Kawakami) seems to have an idyllic twentysomething lifestyle – he deejays at KTUH College Radio, he is dating Sloane, a budding artist, and he skateboards with his skater bros in Kaimuki Park. But, when Sloane nabs the chance to study in New York City, he seizes it as the kick-in-the-ass he needs to make the big move. As he meticulously plans every detail for the move, down to his cat’s absurd flight plan, subtle outsider feelings and misconceptions creep up for Naz (and Sloane) as they must decide whether uprooting is the right move, especially in the midst of a global pandemic.
Award winning director Alika Maikau Tengan (MAUKA TO MAKAI, MOLOKA‘I BOUND) continues crafting his cinematic prose, presenting a unique but very relatable, vision of Hawai’i that is rarely captured on the big screen, using Honolulu’s urbanity as a backdrop for wayward youth and the quarter-life crisis. HIFF is honored to present this special “sneak peek” of EVERY DAY IN KAIMUKĪ, which had the historic distinction as the first feature film by a Kānaka Maoli filmmaker to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. – Anderson Le
