Book Release: Jiuta Sōkyoku Lyrics and Explanations: Songs of the Floating World

Jiuta Sōkyoku Lyrics and Explanations is a collection of translations and detailed explanations of seventy-three representative songs from traditional Japanese Edo-period ensemble music, known as sankyoku. These songs comprise the genre known as jiuta sōkyoku and were performed primarily on the shamisen and  koto (often times with shakuhachi accompaniment). These songs are still performed and loved in modern Japan.

The book includes a number of color Ukiyo-e prints, lent courtesy of the Michener Collection at the Honolulu Museum of Fine Arts, that  provides a visual reference to the thematic material of the song lyrics. The book also includes a link to recordings of a number of these songs.

Historic Waiʻanae “A Place of Kings” 50th Anniversary Edition eBook & Audiobook Release

The Waiʻanae Hawaiian Civic Club (WHCC) announced the virtual release of its Historic Waiʻanae e-book and audiobook to mark the 50th anniversary of the hard copy version of the original publication by author Edward McGrath.
The release is part of an effort to breathe new life into the Waiʻanae community’s rich history through a digital lens. WHCC also aspires to revive ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi within Waiʻanae Moku over the next 50 years. Part of this effort is to distribute pocket-sized ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi dictionaries to fourth graders throughout the region.
Purchasing the e-book or audio version of Historic Waiʻanae will help to fund this initiative.
