Advance Stuff Class led by Dane Nakama (5 Friday classes beginning June 17)
In this mixed media intensive class students will gain experience in developing a wide breadth of styles and techniques to a cohesive body of work.
Geared towards high school/ college students/ and artists working towards the intent of creating a cohesive portfolio, this 6-week class will have weekly prompts and exercises - exploring the intersections of medium and the coherence of though - students will refine their ability to think critically about their practice as well as expand their definition of art making. Advance level class students will be expected to complete one art assignment each week.
Pinch, Slab, Coil with Joy Sanchez and Ayako Takao (6-Class Workshop begins June 16)
Six exciting weeks of hands on studio time in this summer intensive.
In the first three weeks with Joy Sanchez, students will learn fundamental handbuilding skills. This introductory period will also include best studio practices and ceramics vocabulary.
In weeks four, five, and six, students will explore the development of a final piece with Ayaka Takao. we will incorporate all the skills taught in the first three weeks to create an amazing handbuilt ceramic artwork, which will then be included in our fishschool summer showcase!
HiSAM Creates - Creative Aging Workshops Inspired by Mr. Chickenpants (2 Saturdays)
About the Workshops: FREE! 2 Saturdays from 10 AM - 1 PM
A Creative Aging workshop series, inspired by Mr. Chickenpants! This series is geared toward the Creative Aging community, or older adults interested in engaging with the arts.
This workshop series will take place over the first two Saturdays in April. Please try to attend both workshops. Registration is required for both.
Drawing Animals with Denise Karabinus - April 2, 2022
A whimsical and light-hearted approach to drawing imaginative animals. In this class, you will develop several fun-loving animals to keep you company. This is a great activity for family members to laugh and explore together. Consider taking the class with a loved one and turn your drawings into a small book in the Mr. Chickenpants Flip Book class the following week.
Flip Books with Tamara Moan - April 9, 2022
The second workshop will focus on constructing a simple stitched flip book building off the previous week’s animal drawing workshop. The star of our work will be Mr. Chickenpants, the whimsical sculpture in the HiSAM garden. If participants did not attend the drawing workshop, no problem! We’ll also have alternating colored pages featuring our warm-up drawing exercise and other materials available.
Drop-In Art Making: Express Yourself
WEEKLY: Fridays 5 PM – 8 PM & Sundays 10 AM – 1 PM
Drop in to HoMA’s Kīna‘u Courtyard for art activities. Express yourself with a portrait challenge. How will your creativity tackle each challenge and inspire your drawing? All ages are welcome, from keiki to kupuna. Art supplies are included.
Activities are free to join with general admission.

Creativity shines during the 2021 Tiny Float Parade constructed and filmed by Hawaii’s LGBTQ+ community, sponsors and allies. Fabulous and fierce Tiny Floats chock full of LGBTQIA+ Pride. Catch the KHON2 special Tiny Float Parade hosted by Mikey Monis on Oct 16 at 11 AM.

We asked our community to get creative and craft a Tiny Float that made a statement, expressed themselves, and created aloha. The Tiny Floats with the most community votes are eligible to win $500, $350, or $200 cash prizes. The winners will be announced on Sunday, October 17, 2021.
