More than 30 hula hālau will gather in Waikīkī at the end of the month for the Hula ʻOni E Hula Festival.
Presented by Hālau Hula ʻO Hokulani, this year's event marks its 30th year and prides itself on perpetuating hula traditions and culture for practitioners and spectators alike. The festival also features a craft fair of 40 local vendors from across the State of Hawaiʻi.
Hula hālau from Oʻahu, Maui, Hawaiʻi Island and Japan will be participating in the festival contest and a hālau from Europe will perform.
The hula competition invites haumāna (students) ages six and up to participate in showcasing ʻauana and kahiko (modern and ancient) styles. The festival craft fair features dozens of local vendors and their Hawaiʻi made products of Hawaiian designs and various local snacks. The craft fair is free and open to the public. The hula festival requires a ticket.

Savvy’s Surf Shack isn’t just a party — it’s a celebration of local surf culture, music, and performance art, making waves as one of Oahu’s longest-running creative collaborations. Local vendors will be on hand with a variety of treasures for sale, and a portion of the event’s proceeds will go towards ocean cleanup efforts by Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii.

The Hawaiʻi ʻUkulele Festival, a celebration of all things ʻukulele
ʻUkulele enthusiasts can look forward to this free event with live stage entertainment on the bandstand including some of Hawaiʻi’s top ‘ukulele entertainers including Kamakakehau Fernandez, Kalei Gamiao, Ku’uipo Kumukahi, Kimo Hussey, Zanuck Lindsey and more plus emerging artists from ʻUkulele Hale and ʻUkulele Puapua. Explore historical ‘ukulele displays with hands-on access, a Hawaiʻi Artisans and Crafters Village, multi-ethnic food court and a variety of ʻukulele merchants. Discover the cultural significance the ʻukulele plays as Hawaiʻi’s ambassador of Aloha. Enjoy community information booths and ʻukulele inspired merchandise ranging from gifts, books, apparel, jewelry, and art, a Hawaiian cultural activities zone and more. This is an opportunity to meet and engage Hawaiʻi’s local ʻukulele community. Sponsored by the Hawai’i Tourism Authority, Hawai’i Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Oʻahu Visitors Bureau. Hawaiʻi Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition 2022 on Oahu
Opening Reception Saturday, September 17, 6 PM
Held annually since 1967, the Hawai‘i Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition features the finest traditional and contemporary craft from across the state of Hawai‘i. Our juror visits each island to make public presentations and select the very best work to be included in the exhibition.
This year the exhibition will open on O'ahu and then travel to the Schaefer International Gallery in partnership with Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Tahitian Craft Fair and Family Day at Hawaiian Mission House Houses
Tahitian Craft Fair and Family Day, hosted by Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives
This event is free to the public.
The day will feature Tahitian crafters and entertainment. Featured crafters include Na Maka Kahiko, Jeanne Larson, Cathy Temanaha, and Le Mana Perles.
Hawaiian Mission Houses will showing a short film throughout the day of a History Theatre performance of Tauʻā (portrayed by Albert Ueligitone), an early Tahitian missionary to Hawaiʻi who was instrumental in the conversion of Queen Keōpūolani to Christianity, the translation of the Bible into ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and spent many years as a church worker on Maui. The film will be shown in the Multipurpose room at the Hawaiian Mission Houses.
There will be activities for the whole family including temporary tattoos, TiFaifai Tahitian quilting, 19th century games, Pae 'ore-Tahitian lei making, and Lauhala Weaving with the weavers of Ulana Me ka Lokomaikaʻi.
The three historic houses at Hawaiian Mission Houses will be open for visitors to walk through with stationed docents inside the houses.
Te Vai Ura Nui Tahitian Dance Troupe will be performing from 1pm to 2pm with Tahitian drum and ukulele demonstrations and Tahitian dancing. Te Vai Ura Nui is under the direction of Kumu Catherine and Charlie Temanaha.

All entries must be registered online, but jurying will be held in person on all islands except Lānaʻi.

No Stop Light: Molokai Art Exhibit by Molokai Artists (Tues-Sun thru May 28)
No Stop Light: Molokai is an exhibition by contemporary and traditional artists, with sculpture, fiber, wood, ceramic, photography, painting, and jewelry, all created on Molokai.
This historic show, the largest group exhibition by Molokai artists in Honolulu, is an opportunity for these often-unsung artists to convey their experiences of living on a Hawaiian Island so different from Oʻahu that there is no need for traffic lights. Coordinated by artist Kim Markham, co-founder of the Molokai Arts Center and renowned ceramicist.

Hawaii Triennial 2022: Lauhala Weaving Lessons
For HT22, Miao Ying's online work Hardcore Digital Detox (HDD) is evolving into a series of meditation and mindfulness instructions consciously playing with the paradisiacal image of Hawaiʻi and experienced via Virtual Reality (VR). To contrast with the virtuality of this utopian environment, the HT22 iteration of HDD on view at Royal Hawaiian Center also include a IRL workshop series of mind-body practice such as 'selfie' drawing by hand and lauhala weaving.
Every Wednesday, the Royal Hawaiian Center offers free lauhala weaving lessons with Kumu Bill Keoua Nelson! The lesson will cover the basic skills, technique, preparation and crafting of hala leaves into wearable Hawaiian art, such as a bracelet. Classes are limited to the first 25 persons, ages 7 and older.
