An American Dream is accompanied by a four-piece chamber ensemble, and while this opera is a piece of fiction, the story was crafted from interviews with residents of Puget Sound, Washington, who experienced the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II.
HOT partners with the Honouliuli National Historic Site for this special production. Although not yet open to the public, Honouliuli National Historic Site will tell the history of incarceration, martial law, and the experience of prisoners of war in Hawai‘i during World War II. Honouliuli National Historic Site will be a place to reflect on wartime experiences and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of freedom and justice.

This one-act romp stars a world-class cast including local favorites Blythe Kelsey, Leslie Goldman, and Robert Feng, baritone Joshua Jeremiah in the title role with soprano Toni Marie Palmertree and tenor Brian Vu, led by conductor Mark Morash and director Gregory Keller. This hilarious one-act farce is filled with ridiculous plans, hijinks, and trickery. It is the perfect opera for first-timers, and even though it’s brief, it’s delightfully entertaining.

Hawaii Opera Theatre’s Orvis Young Voices Studio 2022/2023 Auditions
This program is open to high school singers living in the state of Hawai'i.
Those selected will have the opportunity to work with professionals in opera and the performing arts to hone their skills as performers. Participants will perform and learn from HOT staff and guest artists and each other in masterclass format, learn about professional opera performances, and participate in workshops for acting, diction, and interpretation. Classes are led by Hawai'i Opera Theatre staff, and guest artists and clinicians locally and from the mainland.
Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus' Summer Intensive 3-Week Program - Registration Now Open
All activities will take place at the UH Manoa Music Department
June 13 to July 1, 2022 • Monday to Friday from 1pm to 5pm
In partnership with Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus, Hawai'i Opera Theatre is adapting Mozart's Magic Flute to tell the tales of special places here in Hawai'i. This three-week summer program is open to students grades 5 through graduating seniors and will conclude with a fully staged production on June 30 and July 1, 2022. Participants will get hands-on with props, costumes, and set design while receiving world-class instruction in audition techniques, stage makeup, drama and vocal skills.

In February, HOT presents The Tragedy of Carmen, Peter Brook’s gripping adaptation that brings Bizet’s opera back to its origins of sexual intrigue, power, and complexity.
In this distilled 90-minute production, Carmen’s embrace of her dark fate is elevated from an act of submission to an assertion of power. All making their HOT debuts, Ashley Dixon stars as Carmen, with Christian Pursell as Escamillo and Maria Valdes as Micaëla. HOT favorite Karen Tiller returns to direct, with Emily Senturia conducting.
