Introduction to Needle Felting (2 sessions on Sat.)
Felt is defined as "a textile material that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers together."
In needle felting, felt is formed by repeatedly stabbing a needle into a piece of wool in order to stiffen and mold it into the desired shape. For the first session of this 2-part introductory needle-felting class, Jenny will teach students the basic techniques used to make an owl. In the second session students will learn how to felt over a simple wire armature to make a seahorse.
Working with sharp needles so participants must have adequate hand-eye coordination.
Beginning Batik (6 sessions on Thursdays)
Batik is an Indonesian word meaning writing with wax.
Waxed areas create a resist design that dyes and paint cannot penetrate. Traditional batik techniques involve successive applications of wax and dye, submersing the fabric in a dye vat, one color at a time and layering the wax resist. In this class we use a more modern technique of painting diluted acrylic paints instead of vat dyes. This allows the artist to create a variety of colors next to each other without the colors mixing with the previous layer. Traditional Indonesian tools and brushes will be used to apply hot soy wax resist to the fabric. Resist and dyed areas can be layered to create complex designs and lovely textures. Students will be able to create several samples of finished artworks.
Tapestry weaving with Reina Young Class(3 sessions on Saturdays begins Aug. 13)
Create your own decorative tapestry or wall hanging on a simple frame loom.
Basic weaving techniques and stitches, how to begin and end your tapestry and how to create shapes, patterns and textures for your own unique design will be taught. Frame loom tapestry is creative and perfect for all craft lovers.
